Home / Turkish Airlines Baggage Allowance: What You Need to Know Before You Fly
Are you flying with Turkish Airlines? Then you must know their baggage rules! If you don’t, you might have to pay extra at the airport or leave some of your things behind. That’s never fun. Turkish Airlines is quite generous, but the rules differ for each ticket type and flight route. Some passengers get to bring more bags, while others have limits. It all depends on your ticket and destination.
In this guide, we’ll break down everything step by step.
Checked baggage is the big bag that goes under the plane. You won’t have it with you during the flight. It will be taken at the check-in counter and returned when you land. Here are the weight limits:
Turkish Airlines Checked Baggage
Class | Max Weight per Bag | Size Limit |
Economy Class | 23 kg | 158 cm |
Business Class | 32 kg | 158 cm |
If your bag is heavier than the allowed weight, you must pay extra. Additionally, no single bag can be heavier than 32 kg. If your bag is too heavy, you must split it into two bags.
Babies have different baggage rules. Parents need to know what they can bring. Here’s a simple breakdown.
Checked Baggage Rules for Babies
Package Type | Checked Baggage |
EcoFly Package (Europe & Tel Aviv) | No checked baggage |
Piece Baggage Routes | 1 bag (23 kg) |
Other Routes | 10 kg |
Parents can bring a small baby stroller. It should not be bigger than 115 cm. Babies can also have 8 kg of cabin baggage (a small bag inside the plane).
If you have a Star Alliance Gold Card, you get extra baggage:

If your baggage does not follow these rules, you may need to pay extra, and your bag will be sent in the cargo hold. Always check your baggage at check-in to avoid any issues.

Turkish Airlines lets you bring your sports equipment safely and easily for a good price. Here’s what you can take.
Sports equipment is checked baggage and goes in the aircraft hold.
Each set of sports gear can weigh up to 23 kg. If it’s more than 23 kg, it counts as a second set, and you’ll have to pay an extra fee. Sports gear must be separate from your regular baggage and shouldn’t have personal items inside. If you have a stopover at an international airport, there’s an extra fee of 30 EUR for all sports gear.
You can carry small musical instruments inside the plane with you. But your instrument must fit inside your free cabin baggage limit. Also, its total size must not be more than 118 cm.
For more prominent instruments like a cello, there are different rules. If you are travelling on an international flight that goes through or from Türkiye, here’s what you need to know. You must pay for an extra seat for your cello. It cannot weigh more than 75 kg. The size must be within 140 cm in length, 42 cm in width, and 25 cm in height. You must book the cello at least 48 hours before your flight.
The price of carrying a cello depends on your ticket type. In Economy Class, one-way baggage costs at least USD 200. In Business Class, one-way baggage costs USD 500. For a return trip, it costs USD 1000. The normal ticket rules will apply if you need to change or cancel your ticket.
There are many rules when travelling with pets. These rules are made to keep pets safe. They also help other passengers have a good flight.
Some pets cannot sit with you on the plane. They have to travel in a special part of the plane called the cargo hold. Big dogs and some other pets go there because they are too big to sit inside with people. But don’t worry! This space is made safe for them. It has fresh air, and the temperature is just right for pets.
Some small pets are allowed to sit with you inside the plane. This usually includes small dogs, cats, and birds. But the pet must be inside a special carrier. The carrier must fit under the seat in front of you. The pet must also be quiet and not disturb other passengers. If your pet is too big or active, it might have to go in the cargo hold instead.
Service animals are allowed to sit with their owners in the cabin. They do not need to stay in a cage. However, they must be well-behaved and trained to help their owner. If you have a service animal, tell the airline in advance so they can make arrangements.
Soldiers serving in Northern Cyprus and students travelling with discounts may get special baggage prices. Soldiers pay 20 TRY per extra kilogram. Students also get the same price. But they must buy tickets from special sales offices to get the discount. This discount only works for Turkish Airlines flights, not for other airlines.
Planes have strict rules about what you can bring. Some things are prohibited, while others can only be carried in specific ways. Here is a list:
Packing your bags for a flight with Turkish Airlines doesn’t have to be confusing! Now that you understand the baggage rules, you can travel easily.
Before you go, check your ticket. Different tickets allow different baggage limits. Make sure your bags are the right size and weight. Spend a little time checking Turkish Airlines’ baggage policy before you pack. Fly in style.
Small dogs, cats, and some birds like parakeets and canaries can sit inside the cabin. But they must be in a pet carrier.
A stopover is when your flight waits long at another airport before reaching the final destination. If you have a stopover for more than 24 hours, you might have to pay extra baggage fees. It is best to ask the airline before your trip to avoid surprises.
